Chiang Mai, nicknamed the “Rose of the North”, every February transforms into a sea of enchanting flowers. Since 1977, the Chiang Mai Flower Festival has presented a beautiful blend of colorful flowers and distinctive Lanna culture. More than 25 decorated floats filled with millions of fresh flowers parade through the city center, creating a festive and romantic atmosphere that can be enjoyed for free by all visitors.

History of the Chiang Mai Flower Festival

The Chiang Mai Flower Festival began in 1977 and has become an annual tradition that is inseparable from the identity of Chiang Mai City. This festival was originally initiated to celebrate the horticultural richness of Northern Thailand, which is blessed with a cool mountainous climate, ideal for cultivating various types of flowers that cannot grow in other regions of Thailand.

The year 2026 marks the 49th celebration of the most iconic flower festival in Thailand. For nearly five decades, this event has continued to develop from a simple local celebration into an international attraction that draws tens of thousands of tourists from around the world. The Thai government has even recognized Chiang Mai as a "World Festival and Event City" thanks to the success of this annual festival.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival 2026: Dates and Complete Schedule

The Chiang Mai Flower Festival 2026 will be held for 3 full days, from Friday, February 13, to Sunday, February 15, 2026. The determination of this date was made with careful consideration because February is the end of the winter season and the peak blooming period of various local flowers in Chiang Mai. The following is the detailed schedule by day:

Friday, February 13, 2026

19.00: Official opening of the 49th festival at Nong Buak Haad Park, marked by speeches from city officials and Lanna cultural performances.
20.00–23.00: The Miss Flower Blooming Beauty contest is held on the main stage at Nong Buak Haad Park, featuring contestants in traditional Thai costumes showcasing their elegance and love for flowers.

Saturday, February 14, 2026

08.00: Grand Flower Parade, this is the main highlight of the festival! More than 25 magnificent flower-decorated floats start from Nawarat Bridge. The parade route passes through Thapae Road, Kotchasarn Road, Changlor Road, and Arak Road, and will end at Nong Buak Haad Park around 12.00.

Sunday, February 15, 2026

16.00–20.00: Thai Lanna Performances and Cultural Show as the closing at Nong Buak Haad Park. The last day of the festival is usually not as crowded as Saturday, making it suitable for visitors who want to enjoy the flower exhibition more calmly. The entire Nong Buak Haad Park area remains open until midnight for the last chance to see before the festival officially ends.

Festival Location: Nong Buak Haad Park

Nong Buak Haad Park (also spelled Suan Buak Hat) is the main location of the Chiang Mai Flower Festival. This park is located in the southwest corner of Chiang Mai Old City, right inside the moat area. This location is very easy to find, if you are inside the Old City and walk southwest following the moat, you will definitely find this park.

The roads around the park (Arak Road and Bumrung Buri Road) will be closed to traffic or experience severe congestion during the festival. The pedestrian area is filled with food stalls selling Northern Thai specialties, such as khao soi (curry noodle soup) and sai oua (spicy sausage), souvenir stalls, and flower arrangement workshops.

Flower Parade Route: Where Are the Best Spots?

The Grand Flower Parade on Saturday morning is the core of the festival that must be witnessed. Understanding the parade route will help you get the best location to watch and capture photos of the magnificent decorated floats.

Starting Point: Nawarat Bridge

The parade officially begins in the Nawarat Bridge area that crosses the Ping River. The decorated float contestants have been lined up since 06.00–07.00 along Charoen Muang Road, starting from the Railway Station to Nawarat Bridge. In this area, special VIP stands are available for officials and sponsors, but the general public can still watch for free from the roadside.

Thapae Road and Thapae Gate

After Nawarat Bridge, the parade moves toward Thapae Road heading to the iconic Thapae Gate—the historic red brick gate that is a symbol of Chiang Mai City. Thapae Gate is the most popular photo location because of the combination of flower-decorated floats with traditional architectural backgrounds that are very attractive to capture and upload to social media (Instagrammable).

Along the Moat: Kotchasarn Road

From Thapae Gate, the parade turns left following the Old City moat through Kotchasarn Road. This section of the route is more spacious and not as crowded compared to Thapae Gate, making it suitable for those who want to watch the parade more comfortably without having to squeeze through crowds.

Changlor Road and Arak Road

The parade continues its journey through Changlor Road and Arak Road, before finally arriving at Nong Buak Haad Park around 11.00 to 12.00. This final section of the route tends to be the quietest because most of the crowd has already waited at the final destination or felt satisfied watching it at earlier locations.

Use Google Maps to easily find the parade route, the location of Nong Buak Haad Park, and the best photo spots. To stay online without the hassle of buying a local SIM, use a Thailand eSIM from Global Komunika that activates instantly by scanning a QR code and has stable connectivity throughout Thailand.

Miss Chiang Mai: A Unique Beauty Pageant

One of the main attractions of the Flower Festival is the Miss Chiang Mai Flower Festival beauty pageant, which is very different from conventional beauty contests. Contestants are judged not only based on physical beauty, but also knowledge of Lanna culture, elegance, dancing skills, and—most importantly—their love for flowers and the environment.

The main competition events take place on the Nong Buak Haad Park stage on Friday and Saturday nights. Contestants perform traditional Thai dances that they learned specifically for the competition, answer question and answer sessions about environmental conservation and Chiang Mai heritage, and demonstrate elegance through various costume changes.

Chiang Mai Weather in February: Ideal for the Festival

The weather in Chiang Mai in February is one of the best throughout the year, making it the perfect time for outdoor festivals. February marks the end of the cool season and the transition toward the hot season, with weather conditions at an ideal point between cold and heat.

Temperature and General Conditions

Daytime temperatures in Chiang Mai during February 2026 range between 30–34°C (86–93°F). This temperature feels warm, but is not yet considered extremely hot like in March–April. Mornings and evenings are much cooler, dropping to 17–20°C (63–68°F). This significant temperature difference between day and night is a characteristic of Chiang Mai’s climate, which is surrounded by mountains.

Clothing Tips

For daytime while watching the parade or exploring the park, wear light and breathable clothing, such as cotton or linen. Sleeveless tops, T-shirts, shorts, or summer dresses are comfortable choices. Do not forget a wide-brim hat or baseball cap for sun protection, sunglasses to reduce glare, and SPF 50+ sunscreen reapplied every 2 hours.

For nighttime when temperatures drop, bring a light jacket, cardigan, or shawl. Temperatures of 17–20°C may feel cold, especially if you sit outdoors to watch cultural performances. Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are very important because you will walk a lot in the festival area and parade route.
