That's what Climate Card Seoul offers, an unlimited ride transportation card launched by Seoul Metropolitan Government since January 2024. Priced from ₩5,000 (around Rp57,000) for a 1-day pass, this card could be your best money-saving weapon during your Seoul holiday.

What Is Climate Card Seoul?

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the Climate Card is a comprehensive transportation card that provides unlimited access to subway, city buses, village buses, Ttareungi (Seoul Bike), and Hangang Bus (river bus) for a set period after a single top-up. This card isn't exclusive to tourists—anyone can use it, including locals and foreign travelers.

Launched as part of Seoul's carbon emission reduction policy, the Climate Card recorded over 17 million recharges and more than 720,000 daily users as of November 2025. In 2026, coverage expanded further with added stations in Seongnam, Hanam, and Uijeongbu.

Short-Term Pass (for Travelers)

This short-term pass is most suitable for travelers visiting Seoul for a few days. According to Seoul Metropolitan Government, available options include passes from 1 day to 7 days. Starting March 2026, short-term passes can be purchased using international credit cards.

  • 1-day pass: ₩5,000 (around Rp57,000)
  • 2-day pass: ₩8,000 (around Rp91,000)
  • 3-day pass: ₩10,000 (around Rp114,000)
  • 5-day pass: ₩15,000 (around Rp171,000)
  • 7-day pass: ₩20,000 (around Rp228,000)

Important note: short-term passes do not include Ttareungi and Hangang Bus—only Seoul subway and city buses.

30-Day Pass (for Long-Stay)

For those staying longer in Seoul, the monthly pass offers the best value. According to data from Enkostay, 30-day pass prices in 2026 are as follows.

  • Basic (subway + bus): ₩62,000 (around Rp707,000)
  • Combined (subway + bus + Ttareungi): ₩65,000 (around Rp741,000)
  • Youth discount (ages 19–39, Korean residents): ₩55,000–58,000 (around Rp627,000–661,000)

Physical Card Fee

The physical Climate Card is sold separately for ₩3,000 (around Rp34,000) and can be recharged monthly. Cards are available at vending machines in Seoul Metro Line 1–8 subway stations and convenience stores near stations.

Where Can You Use the Climate Card?

Coverage is quite extensive, but there are important limitations to understand.

What's Included

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government, Climate Card Seoul covers all Seoul-based subway lines (Line 1–9, Ui-Sinseol Line, Sillim Line), some connected Gyeonggi subway routes, all Seoul-licensed city and village buses, Ttareungi (30-day pass only), and Hangang Bus (30-day pass only).

  • All Seoul Metro Line 1–9 subway lines
  • Ui-Sinseol Line and Sillim Line
  • Gimpo Gold Line
  • Parts of Gyeongchun Line (Cheongnyangni–Sinnae) and Seohae Line (Gimpo Airport–Ilsan)
  • All Seoul-licensed city and village buses, including Owl Bus (night bus)
  • AREX from Gimpo Airport to Seoul Station (one-way, from airport to city)

What's Not Included

This is the part that often confuses travelers—and disappoints them if they don't know beforehand.

  • Sinbundang Line
  • Subway lines outside Seoul coverage (most of Gyeonggi-do and Incheon)
  • AREX from Incheon Airport to Seoul—so when you first land at Incheon, you'll need to pay separately using T-Money or buy an AREX ticket
  • Intercity buses and airport buses
  • Gyeonggi-do or Incheon-licensed buses (even if their routes pass through Seoul)

Important: if you board the subway from a Seoul station but exit at a station outside the coverage area, Climate Card won't apply and staff will charge the full fare from departure to destination.

Climate Card for Children: What Are the Rules?

According to guidelines from Visit Seoul, the Climate Card doesn't offer age-based discounts—the climate card price is the same for all ages. However, children under 6 can ride Seoul public transportation for free when accompanied by an adult, without needing any card.

For children aged 6 and above, each person needs their own Climate Card. One card cannot be used for alternating taps by multiple people. Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to launch special discounts for children, families with multiple kids, and low-income users in the second half of 2025–2026, but for now rates remain uniform.

How to Buy and Use Climate Card Seoul

The process is quite simple, but there are a few steps to keep in mind.

Step 1: Buy a Physical Card

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government, physical cards can be purchased at Seoul Metro Information Centers (Line 1–8), vending machines at subway stations, and convenience stores near stations (GS25, 7-Eleven, CU). Physical card price: ₩3,000. Starting March 2026, payment can be made using international credit cards.

Step 2: Choose and Load Your Pass

Once you have the physical card, select your pass type (1-day, 2-day, 3-day, 5-day, 7-day, or 30-day) and load it at kiosk machines available at Line 1–9, Ui-Sinseol Line, and Sillim Line subway stations. Payment can be made with cash or credit/debit card.

Step 3: Tap In and Tap Out

Just like other transportation cards, tap when entering and tap when exiting. This applies for both subway and bus.

Important things to remember:

  • Short-term passes activate immediately on the day of loading—so load it on the first day you'll actually use it, not the day before
  • 30-day passes can select a start date within 5 days after loading
  • Transfers from subway to bus (or vice versa) within 30 minutes count as free
  • If you fail to tap out twice, the card can be blocked for 24 hours
  • One card is for one person only—it cannot be shared for alternating use

Climate Card vs T-Money: Which Is Cheaper?

The choice depends on how often you use transportation and where you're heading.

According to analysis from Visit Seoul and Klook, the base fare for a single Seoul subway ride is ₩1,550. If you average 3–4 rides per day, daily spending is around ₩4,650–6,200 using T-Money. With a Climate Card 7-day pass at ₩20,000, break-even point is reached on day 4—the rest is free.

For a more detailed comparison with numbers per scenario, read Climate Card vs T-Money: Which to Choose If You're Only in Korea for 3–5 Days?

  • Climate Card Seoul is cheaper if: you spend most of your time in Seoul, ride transportation more than 3 times per day, and your trip is at least 3 days
  • T-Money is more practical if: you plan to go outside Seoul (Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju), need to pay at convenience stores or taxis, or only occasionally use public transportation

Many travelers choose to carry both—Climate Card for daily mobility in Seoul, and T-Money for trips outside the coverage area or non-transportation payments.

Additional Discounts for Climate Card Holders

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government, Climate Card holders with an active pass are entitled to discounts at various Seoul cultural facilities. Some are quite attractive for travelers.

  • 50% discount on Seoul Science Center admission
  • Discounted tickets at Seoul Grand Park
  • Discounts at Seoul Botanic Park
  • Price cuts at select performances and cultural venues partnered with the SEOULDAL program

Discounts apply while the card is registered under the user's name and during the active usage period.

Tips to Maximize Your Climate Card While in Seoul

A few small strategies can make Climate Card Seoul work harder for your wallet.

  • Load your pass on the first morning of your trip—not the day before—since short-term passes activate immediately upon loading
  • Take advantage of Owl Bus (night bus) which operates all night—Climate Card works on all Seoul-licensed buses including N-series buses
  • Use the free subway-to-bus transfer within 30 minutes for route efficiency
  • Download Naver Map for Seoul public transportation navigation—more accurate than Google Maps in Korea
  • Don't forget to tap out every time you exit—forgetting twice can block your card for 24 hours
  • If Climate Card is out of stock at one place, try another convenience store or Seoul Metro Information Center at a different station

Stay Connected While Exploring Seoul

Climate Card Seoul definitely wins when it comes to handling transportation, but to maximize your city exploration experience—from Naver Map navigation, checking midnight Owl Bus schedules, to updating your itinerary—reliable internet connection is still essential. Activate a South Korea eSIM from Global Komunika before departure so you're connected the moment your plane lands, without queuing to buy a SIM card at Incheon Airport.

Climate Card: Small Investment, Big Freedom

With climate card prices starting at ₩5,000 per day, this card offers freedom that's hard to match by any other transportation card in Seoul. No need to calculate every time you tap in, no worrying about running out of balance mid-journey, and no confusion choosing between subway or bus—just take whichever is closest. For travelers spending most of their time in Seoul, Climate Card Seoul is one of the smallest expenses with the biggest impact on comfort and savings during your holiday.
