Traveling to Saudi? These Are Recommended Stores for Authentic and Premium Ajwa Dates

One of the must-buy souvenirs when traveling to Saudi Arabia is ajwa dates, premium dates that only grow in Madinah. For Umrah pilgrims or Muslim travelers, buying authentic ajwa dates from a trusted date store is a priority—either for personal consumption or as a gift. This article fully discusses recommended date stores in Madinah and how to distinguish authentic vs fake ajwa.

What Are Ajwa Dates and Why Are They Special?

Ajwa dates (Phoenix dactylifera L.) are a type of date that grows exclusively in the Madinah region, Saudi Arabia. These dates are nicknamed the "Prophet’s Dates" because they were planted directly by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) beside the Quba Mosque in Madinah. In an authentic hadith it is mentioned: "Whoever eats seven ajwa dates in the morning will not be affected by poison or magic on that day." (HR. Bukhari & Muslim).

Characteristics of Ajwa Dates:

  • Color: Deep black with a dark brown hue
  • Shape: Round and medium to large in size
  • Texture: Thick flesh, chewy, slightly soft but not wet
  • Taste: Naturally sweet with hints of caramel, honey, and cinnamon—not overly
  • sweet like other date varieties
  • Aroma: Distinctive aroma similar to caramel and honey

Nutritional Content: Rich in carbohydrates (quick energy), fiber (digestive health), protein, vitamins A, B complex, K, potassium (heart health), magnesium, iron, and high antioxidants. Ajwa dates have a low glycemic index—safe for diabetics in reasonable portions.

Ajwa Madinah Dates vs Ajwa Aliyah Dates: What Is the Difference?

There are two main variants of ajwa dates that often confuse buyers:

Ajwa Madinah Dates

Grown in the general Madinah region. Smaller in size, perfectly round shape, deep black color, soft and slightly tender texture, with a sweet taste dominated by caramel notes. These are the most common and popular “classic” ajwa dates.

Ajwa Aliyah (Awali) Dates

Grown in the 'Aliyah' or 'Awali' area in the southeast of Madinah city. Larger in size with a slightly oval shape, black color with more visible dark brown hues, firmer and drier texture (not as soft as Madinah ajwa), with sweetness dominated by honey notes.

Which One Is Better? There is no better or worse option—everything depends purely on personal preference. If you like dates that are soft and melt in your mouth, choose Ajwa Madinah. If you prefer dates with a denser and chewier texture, Ajwa Aliyah is the right choice.

Recommended Date Stores in Madinah, Saudi Arabia

While in Madinah, there are several date stores known for premium ajwa quality and relatively fair prices:

Al-Manakhah Date Market (Kurma Market)

Location: Located near the Nabawi Mosque, so it can be reached on foot from hotels where pilgrims stay.

This is the largest wholesale date market in Madinah with dozens of date shops lined up. Almost all Umrah pilgrims will stop by here. Here you can find ajwa dates in various grades (qualities) and prices. Other date varieties are also available: Sukari, Safawi, Mabroom, Rutab, etc.

Ajwa Date Prices in Al-Manakhah:

Grade C (small, slightly dry): 80–120 SAR per kg
Grade B (medium, standard): 150–200 SAR per kg
Grade A (jumbo, premium): 250–350 SAR per kg
Grade VIP/Super Premium: 400–600 SAR per kg

Shopping Tips: Come in the morning or afternoon to avoid crowds. Bargaining is allowed but not too significant (maximum 10–20%). Buy in large quantities (5–10 kg) to get wholesale prices. Make sure the store has a clearly visible digital scale for transparency.

Date Shops Around the Nabawi Mosque

Along the streets leading to the Nabawi Mosque, there are many date shops with attractive display arrangements. Prices in this area tend to be 20–30% higher compared to Al-Manakhah due to the very strategic location and targeting tourists who do not have time to visit the market. Nevertheless, the product quality remains excellent with more exclusive packaging, making them very suitable as gifts.

Advantages: Practical, no need to take a taxi to the market, you can buy before or after prayers at the Nabawi Mosque.
Disadvantages: Higher prices, more limited choices, limited bargaining.

Large Supermarkets (Carrefour, Tamimi, Panda)

Modern supermarkets in Madinah also sell ajwa dates in exclusive box packaging. Prices are fixed and cannot be bargained, but the quality is guaranteed and the packaging is very good for formal gifts. Price: 200–400 SAR per kg depending on the brand.

Some well-known brands available in supermarkets include Castle Farm (has organic certification), Crown Dates, Al Madina Ara Dates (certified by the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture), and Sultani Dates which come in premium packaging.

How to Store Ajwa Dates During Travel

Ajwa dates have a denser and drier texture compared to other types, but they still require special handling so their quality does not decline when carried during long trips.

Use Airtight Containers and Proper Materials

Choose containers made of food-grade plastic or high-quality ziplock bags that can seal air perfectly. Air trapped inside the container is the main enemy that can damage the texture of the dates.

Airtight containers function to prevent moisture from entering the fruit flesh. If humidity is maintained, ajwa dates will not easily grow mold and their natural sweetness will remain intact even when stored for quite a long time inside a bag.

Protect from Heat and Sunlight Exposure

Extreme heat during travel can damage the nutritional content and texture of the dates. Make sure you store the date container in an area of your bag that does not directly touch the vehicle wall or window.

Heat exposure will cause the sugar content in the dates to melt and come out to the surface of the skin, making the dates very sticky. This condition accelerates the fermentation process, causing the dates to taste sour or spoil faster than they should.

Maintain Cleanliness and Sterility During Handling

Bacterial contamination often comes from wet or dirty hands when taking dates during the trip. Make sure your hands or the tools used are completely dry before touching the remaining stock inside the container.

Water droplets that accidentally enter the storage container will create a humid environment that mold favors. It is best to take the portion needed for one serving and immediately reseal the main container tightly.
