- Renting a car is essential — Greater Palm Springs is very spread out and there is no adequate public transportation between Palm Springs, Indio, and Joshua Tree. PSP Airport has all major rental car companies (Alamo, Hertz, Sixt)
- Prepare drinking water — the California desert is very dry and hot, especially in April. Bring at least 2 liters per person per day, more if hiking in Joshua Tree
- Sunscreen and a hat are mandatory — UV in the desert is very intense, even in the morning
- Joshua Tree requires an entrance fee — $30 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. Can be purchased online at nps.gov or at the entrance
- Internet can be patchy in Joshua Tree — cellular signal is very weak inside the national park. Download offline maps before entering
