Tips to Avoid Long Airport Queues During Your Eid Homecoming

Every year, the same scene repeats at airports during Eid homecoming—check-in lines snaking endlessly, security overflowing, and boarding gates packed to the brim. But with the right preparation, all of that can be avoided. Here are practical tips to make your trip smoother from the check-in counter to your airplane seat.

Know the Peak Crowd Times for Eid 2026 at the Airport

Soekarno-Hatta Airport projects total passenger movement during Eid 2026 to reach 3,010,993 people, an increase of around 2.22% compared to Eid 2025. Peak homecoming flow is expected on March 18, 2026 with 187,202 passengers in a single day, while peak return flow is predicted on March 28, 2026 with 198,387 people.

The busiest days you should avoid if possible:

  • D-3 to D-1 before Eid (March 17–19, 2026) — peak homecoming rush, airport at its most crowded
  • D+3 to D+5 after Eid (March 24–26, 2026) — peak return flow
  • Morning hours 05:00–10:00 AM — busiest period due to many early flights

Arrive at the Airport Earlier Than Usual

On regular days 2 hours is enough, but during Eid rush—recalculate!

The Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Chief urges passengers to arrive at the airport earlier, at least three hours before scheduled departure, to avoid long queues and missing flights. InJourney as the airport operator also recommends the same—arrive at least 2–3 hours before departure to anticipate long queues at security check and immigration.

Recommended arrival times during Eid homecoming:

  • Domestic flights — arrive at least 3 hours before departure (not 2 hours like normal days)
  • International flights — arrive at least 4 hours before departure
  • During peak rush (D-3 to D-1) — add an extra 30–60 minutes on top of the above

Do Online Check-in Before Heading to the Airport

Online Check-in Before Heading to the Airport

The most effective step that's still often overlooked! Do online check-in at least 24 hours before departure to avoid airport queues. With online check-in, you can head straight to the baggage drop counter which usually has much shorter lines than regular check-in counters, or even go directly to security if you're only carrying cabin baggage.

Airlines that support online check-in:

  • Garuda Indonesia — via website garuda-indonesia.com or Garuda Indonesia app
  • Batik Air — via website batikair.com or Batik Air app
  • Lion Air — via Lion Air app
  • Citilink — via website citilink.co.id or Citilink app

Use Digital ID and Keep Documents Ready

Digital ID

Immigration and security queues can be drastically cut with proper document preparation!

Use the SatuSehat Mobilitas app as a valid single identity for flights, and make sure your NIK is integrated for face recognition during boarding. Additionally:

  • Save your digital boarding pass in the most accessible spot on your phone—don't let the screen lock while the queue is moving
  • Have your passport and travel documents in hand, not inside your bag, before entering the immigration line
  • Separate important documents from other belongings so you don't have to dig through your bag at security

Pack Your Bag Properly Before Leaving

Security check is the queue point that most often causes delays—and here's the main reason!

Soekarno-Hatta Airport is now equipped with ATRS (Automated Tray Return System) X-Ray machines, new technology to cut queues at security checkpoints. But no matter how advanced the tech, it won't help if your bag isn't ready for inspection:

  • Take out your laptop and powerbank before the queue—don't wait until you're in front of the X-ray machine
  • Separate liquids into a transparent plastic bag and place them in the most accessible spot
  • Remove belts, watches, and metal accessories before entering security—not when you're already at the tray
  • Don't repack your bag in the security lane—move to the baggage collection area after the X-ray machine

Choose the Right Transportation to the Airport

Getting stuck in traffic is the biggest reason passengers arrive late at the airport during Eid homecoming!

Leave at least 3–4 hours before your scheduled departure considering the high volume of vehicles heading to the airport during rush hours. Use real-time navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze to monitor congestion at trouble spots like Pluit junction or the area around Cengkareng toll gate, and make sure your e-toll balance is sufficient to avoid queues at toll gates.

Best transportation options to Soekarno-Hatta during Eid rush:

  • Airport Train (Railink) — most reliable and unaffected by traffic; from Sudirman Baru Station (BNI City) about 45 minutes
  • Damri — available from various pickup points including Sawangan, Depok, Bekasi, and Gambir; booking via the Damri app is recommended to ensure seat availability and avoid terminal queues
  • Taxi or ride-hailing — choose early morning or late night departures to avoid extreme traffic

Take Advantage of Special Eid Airport Facilities

Soekarno-Hatta Airport has deployed 7,832 operational personnel during the Eid 2026 period, consisting of service and technical staff, with around 2,197 personnel on duty each shift. InJourney has also added toilet facilities, prayer rooms, and children's play areas across all airports they manage to improve passenger comfort during the homecoming season.

Additional services you can take advantage of:

  • Health posts — available at every terminal for medical emergencies
  • Inter-terminal shuttle service — free for passengers who go to the wrong terminal or need mobility assistance
  • Real-time flight information — monitor via electronic information boards, airline apps, or AP1 website

Avoid Peak Dates If Possible

Avoid departing during peak homecoming rush which usually falls on D-3 before Eid. If possible, take advantage of early leave policies. Departing on D-7 or D-10 is not only more comfortable at the airport, but also potentially gets you more affordable ticket prices since it's far from peak demand periods.

A Smooth Eid Homecoming Starts with Preparation

Long airport queues during Eid can almost always be anticipated—the key lies in preparation before the day arrives. Online check-in, arrive early, choose the right transportation, and pack your bag properly. With these steps, you can breeze through the entire airport process calmly and reach your gate well before boarding closes.
