These Are the Items You Should and Must Bring into the Airplane Cabin, According to a Former Qantas Pilot

For those who are new to flying, choosing which items to bring into the cabin can be a bit confusing. To make it more complicated, each airline has different regulations regarding what can be carried on board.

But don’t worry — this issue can be clarified thanks to insights shared by former Qantas pilot Jeremy Burfoot, who explains which items are not only allowed but also recommended to bring into the cabin.

What Items Should You Bring into the Airplane Cabin?

Jeremy Burfoot is a former pilot for Qantas with a career spanning over 40 years. With more than 23,000 flying hours, he authored a book titled The Secret Life of Flying, which answers common questions about aviation.

In his book, Jeremy also shares valuable tips about certain items that may seem trivial to some, but are actually essential to bring onboard.

Headphones

Noise-canceling headphones are not just for entertainment during your flight. According to Jeremy, they play an important role in blocking out noise, especially during turbulence.

Headphones can also help reduce the sound of aircraft engines during takeoff, as well as noise from crying babies or restless children nearby. Wearing headphones allows you to begin your flight in a more relaxed state.

Jeremy also explains in his book that, scientifically, noise inside the cabin can dull your sense of taste. This is why wearing headphones is not just for comfort, but also enhances your overall flying experience — including how your food tastes.

Wet Wipes and Antiseptic Liquid

Many passengers assume that airplane seats and tray tables are thoroughly cleaned between flights. However, according to Jeremy, this assumption is incorrect. In reality, tray tables and seats are not cleaned as frequently as people think. Studies have shown that airplane cabins can be a significant breeding ground for germs.

Because of this, bringing wet wipes and antiseptic liquid is highly recommended. You can use them to wipe down your tray table and other surfaces near your seat.

Jeremy particularly emphasizes cleaning the tray table, which is often used for meals, and regular hand sanitizing during the flight. According to him, having these items will help you feel more at ease and reduce anxiety about hygiene onboard.
