It’s common for travelers returning from abroad to have more items in their luggage than when they left—often due to souvenirs and gifts for friends and family. While this is completely normal, it’s important to be mindful of airport customs inspections, which can become a hassle if not handled properly.
Many travelers end up getting their luggage opened by customs officers or are sent through the "Red Channel" (Jalur Merah) where stricter inspections take place. The Red Channel is designated by Indonesia’s Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) for thorough checks on imported goods, including both documents and physical items before a Release Approval Letter (SPPB) is issued.
To help you avoid unnecessary issues at the airport, here are some simple and effective tips from Global Komunika:
Avoid Using Cardboard Boxes
Packing your souvenirs in cardboard boxes may raise red flags with customs officers. It often appears suspicious and may lead to your box being opened—or worse, sent straight to the Red Channel.
Instead, tuck souvenirs neatly between your clothes inside your suitcase or bag. It looks more natural and is less likely to attract attention.
Don’t Separate Souvenirs From Personal Items
Bringing so many souvenirs that you pack them into a separate suitcase might seem like a good idea, but customs officers may view it with suspicion.
Better mix souvenirs with your personal items in one suitcase. Use small pouches to organize the gifts and discreetly place them among your clothes.
Fill Out the Custom Declaration Form Online
The Custom Declaration form is a mandatory report listing the goods you purchased abroad. This includes registering electronic items like smartphones through IMEI submission.
In the past, these forms were filled manually at the airport. Now, you can use the Electronic Custom Declaration (e-CD) system available at ecd.beacukai.go.id.
You’ll need to input:
- Your personal details
- Flight information
- The items you’re bringing, along with their estimated value
Once completed, the system will generate a QR code, which you can scan at the airport upon arrival in Indonesia. You can fill out the e-CD up to two days before your return.
Important: Be honest when filling out the e-CD. False declarations can lead to suspicion and result in your baggage being redirected to the Red Channel.
Preparing your luggage with care, filling out customs forms properly, and blending souvenirs with your personal items can save you a lot of time and stress. Follow these tips and enjoy a smooth arrival back home!
