Literally, Tet Nguyen Dan means "The Feast of the First Morning on the First Day". It is not just a fireworks celebration, but a spiritual moment to honor ancestors and welcome the kitchen god (Ong Tao) returning to heaven.

The essence of the Tet Nguyen Dan Festival is "returning home". Millions of Vietnamese people who live away from home will travel back to reunite with their extended families. They perform house-cleaning rituals to remove last year’s bad luck, prepare red envelopes (Li Xi) for children, and cook traditional dishes such as Banh Chung (sticky rice cake).

The peak of the Lunar New Year 2026 falls on February 17, 2026. However, the festive atmosphere lasts for weeks with the following ritual stages:

February 10, 2026: Kitchen God Day (Ong Cong Ong Tao)

Vietnamese families will burn paper effigies (clothes and hats of the god) and release live carp into the river. These carp are believed to serve as vehicles for the Kitchen God to fly to heaven and report the family’s deeds to the Jade Emperor.

February 16, 2026 (Giao Thua – New Year’s Eve)

The most sacred moment. Families gather for the final dinner of the year (Tat Nien). Exactly at midnight, fireworks are lit across the country to drive away evil spirits.

February 17–19, 2026 (3 Main Days):

  • Day 1: Tet Của Cha (Tet for Father)
The first day is the most sacred moment dedicated specifically to the father’s extended family (Nội). According to the patrilineal tradition, which follows the father’s lineage, the morning is spent gathering at the ancestral home of the father or the eldest son. The entire family wears new clothes for a solemn prayer at the ancestral altar.
  • Day 2: Tet Của Mẹ (Tet for Mother)
After fulfilling the customary obligations to the father’s side, the second day is fully dedicated to the mother’s or wife’s family (Ngoại). For married couples, this is the time to “return home” to the wife’s parents’ house to maintain family ties. The atmosphere on the second day is usually more relaxed, casual, and full of laughter compared to the first day.
  • Day 3: Tet Của Thầy (Tet for Teacher)
This unique Vietnamese tradition is not about blood relations, but about honoring teachers (Thầy). According to the ancient proverb “Without a teacher, you become nothing”, students—both current and successful former ones—visit their teachers’ homes in groups to express gratitude. This reflects that in Vietnam’s social hierarchy, teachers hold a highly honorable position.

Unique Traditions: Hanoi vs Ho Chi Minh City

Although both celebrate Tet Nguyen Dan, the atmosphere in the North (Hanoi) and the South (Ho Chi Minh City) has striking differences:

Hanoi: Serene and Traditional

In the colder north, the symbol of Tet is the pink Peach Blossom. Hanoi residents usually celebrate in a calmer and more introspective way. The Old Quarter area will appear quieter than usual, creating a magical atmosphere with light fog and red lanterns. The must-have dish here is square-shaped Banh Chung, symbolizing the earth.

Ho Chi Minh City: Festive and Flower Celebrations

In contrast to the north, southern Vietnam’s warm climate is associated with the bright yellow Ochna flower (Yellow Mai). Here, the celebration feels more modern and open. Nguyen Hue Street will be transformed into a massive flower street that is highly Instagrammable. The traditional food is Banh Tet, which is cylindrical in shape. New Year’s Eve is usually closed with a spectacular fireworks display along the Saigon River.

Important Tips for Tourists When Experiencing Tet

Holidays during Tet require special strategies so you don’t end up disappointed:

  • Book Tickets Early: Train and domestic flight tickets will definitely sell out or their prices will soar.
  • Check Opening Hours: Many tourist-favorite restaurants close during the first 3–4 days of Tet.
  • Prepare Cash: ATMs often run out of cash before the long holiday due to high withdrawals for red envelopes.

Tet Nguyen Dan 2026 is the heart of Vietnamese culture, more than just a holiday. This moment presents a blend of ancestral reverence traditions and vibrant modern celebrations in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Tet emphasizes the importance of family, cultural roots, and new hope. Visit and experience the warmth and richness of Vietnam’s New Year traditions.
