Planning a flight with Lion Air soon? Before you start packing your suitcase, it’s a good idea to check the latest updates regarding their baggage policy for 2025. Don’t let your holiday be disrupted just because of excess baggage!
Changes in the Latest Lion Air Baggage Regulations
Starting July 17, 2025, Lion Air will officially implement changes to baggage regulations for all their domestic and international flight routes.
Previously, passengers were still entitled to a free baggage allowance (FBA) of 15 to 20 kilograms. However, starting from that date, the free baggage allowance will be reduced to a maximum of 10 kilograms for all routes, both domestic and international.
This change applies to all passengers and is an important adjustment to pay attention to before planning your trip with Lion Air.
Why Has It Changed?
Of course, Lion Air’s changes to the baggage policy are not without reason. Here are several main factors driving this adjustment according to the airline’s official statement:
Adjusting to Modern Travel Needs
Lion Air has observed that people’s travel habits have changed. Many passengers now travel for short trips or carry only essential items, without much checked baggage.
Therefore, the baggage allowance has been reduced to make the check-in and baggage claim process faster and more efficient. This adjustment is made without reducing basic comfort or services for passengers.
Continuing to Provide a Baggage Allowance Despite LCC Status
In accordance with the Minister of Transportation Regulation Number 30 of 2021, low-cost carriers (LCC) like Lion Air are actually permitted not to provide any free checked baggage allowance (0 kg).
However, Lion Air remains committed to passenger comfort by continuing to offer 10 kg of free checked baggage and 7 kg of cabin baggage, even though it operates as an LCC.
This is an additional service beyond the minimum requirements set by the regulations.
Supporting MSMEs and Cargo Services
Through this new baggage policy, Lion Air is also encouraging passengers—especially those carrying large quantities of goods—to switch to using Lion Air’s cargo services (Lion Parcel). This step is expected to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) distribute their products across regions more smoothly and efficiently.
Flexible Options with Pre-Paid Baggage
If you wish to bring more items when flying with Lion Air, you can take advantage of the pre-paid baggage service. With this option, you can purchase additional baggage allowance before your departure at a price significantly lower than buying it directly at the airport.
Pre-paid baggage provides flexibility for passengers who need extra capacity without worrying about the high excess baggage fees on the day of departure.
Booking pre-paid baggage is relatively easy and practical. You can do it directly through Lion Air’s official website, the BookCabin app, or the official website of the airline you’re using—all before your flight schedule.
