The price of a Schengen visa is reported to increase by 12% starting in June 2024.
The European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, stated that despite the increase, Schengen visa fees are still considered “affordable.” The new prices are as follows:
- The adult visa fee, previously €80 (approx. IDR 1,403,848), will rise to €90 (approx. IDR 1,579,329).
- The visa fee for children, previously €40 (approx. IDR 701,924), will rise to €45 (approx. IDR 789,665).
This price increase is primarily attributed to inflation across EU member states. Additionally, the European Commission has authorized external visa service providers to raise the service fees they charge for Schengen visa applications.
The new visa fees are reported to take effect from June 11, 2024.
What is a Schengen Visa?
A Schengen visa is an international travel document that allows tourists to visit 29 countries within the Schengen Area for non-employment purposes. With this visa, travelers can stay in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within a 6-month period.
The Schengen Area includes most EU countries, excluding Ireland and Cyprus, and also covers Romania and Bulgaria for land border entry. In addition, it comprises non-EU countries such as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
The Schengen visa is required for travelers from non-EU countries. However, travelers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada do not need a Schengen visa, as they are allowed visa-free travel for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
