A passport is an essential document required for international travel, similar to a visa. While not all countries require a visa for foreign tourists, all countries mandate a valid passport for entry.
There are two types of passports: the regular passport and the electronic passport (e-passport). Physically, both look almost identical, except for the chip logo on the cover of the electronic passport. For a more detailed comparison between regular and electronic passports, refer to the dedicated article.
Additionally, the passport application process now requires prior reservation or submission of an application. See the full explanation below.
How to Apply for a Passport Online
As of 2023, all passport applications must begin with an online reservation through the M-Paspor app. This online reservation system makes the passport application process significantly more efficient.
Registering and Booking an Appointment via the M-Paspor App
Before registering, prepare the required documents: National ID (KTP), Family Card (KK), and one of the following: Birth Certificate, School Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Baptism Certificate, or Marriage Registration Document.
Steps to register and apply for a passport:
- Download the M-Paspor app from the Play Store or App Store.
- Register by selecting “Daftar Akun” and filling in the required details. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) via email.
- Enter the OTP to activate your account.
Once registration is complete, log in using your registered email and password.
- On the home page, select the “Pengajuan Permohonan” menu.
- Choose the type of application:
- “Permohonan Paspor Reguler” (4-day process)
- “Permohonan Paspor Percepatan” (same-day service) - Select the applicant’s age group: Adult (17 years and above) or Child (under 17, no KTP).
- Choose the nearest immigration office for further processing and passport collection.
- Select the type of passport: regular or electronic.
- Upload a photo of your KTP or take a picture through the app.
- Enter your NIK for verification and click “Lanjutkan.”
- Answer the question “Have you ever had a passport?” If yes, provide a reason for reapplying and enter the old passport number.
- Specify the reason for passport application.
- Enter the destination country (if known). If not, select “Saya belum memiliki negara tujuan.” Provide the address of your stay if applicable.
- Enter the contact information of a relative in Indonesia.
- Upload all required documents (KTP, KK, and one other supporting document mentioned above).
- Fill in your personal and parental data accurately.
- Review your application summary. If applying for multiple people, click “Tambah Pemohon.”
- Select your appointment date at the immigration office. Refer to the availability notes before selecting.
- After submitting your application, you will receive a billing code. This must be paid within two hours.
- Once payment is completed, your status will update to “Sudah Dibayar,” and you will receive a queue code.
- Print the queue code or screenshot the service page with the date of appointment for reference.
Visiting the Immigration Office on Your Appointment Date
Once your reservation through the M-Paspor app is complete, simply visit the selected immigration office on your scheduled date.
Do not forget to bring the required documents (KTP, KK, and one additional supporting document) in both photocopy and original form.
At the immigration office:
- Submit your documents to the officer for verification.
- If the documents are complete, you will be given a queue number.
- Wait for your turn to provide biometric data, complete a document check, and attend the interview.
Your passport will be ready for collection 4 days after passing the interview, or on the same day if you chose the expedited service.
Passport Application Fees
Fees differ depending on the passport type:
- Regular passport (48 pages): Rp350,000
- Electronic passport (48 pages): Rp650,000
- Expedited service (same-day processing): Additional Rp1,000,000
