As the 2025 Christmas and New Year holiday season approaches, airlines are preparing for the expected surge in passenger numbers. One of the measures being taken is the tightening of baggage regulations.
In November 2024, Lion Group — the parent company of major Indonesian carriers such as Lion Air, Batik Air, and Wings Air — officially announced a new policy concerning passenger baggage.
New Baggage Policy by Lion Group
The new policy focuses on restrictions for the size and type of baggage eligible for Free Baggage Allowance (FBA), with the aim of enhancing passenger comfort and flight safety.
Passengers bringing any of the following baggage types will not be allowed to exceed dimensions of 35 x 35 x 30 cm:
- Boxes (cardboard)
- Styrofoam containers
- Wooden pallets
- Sacks (over 10 kg in weight)
If baggage falls under one of the categories above and exceeds the size or weight limit, starting from December 1, 2024, an Excess Baggage Ticket (EBT) fee will be charged at check-in, with a minimum payment equivalent to 5 kg.
To avoid this issue, passengers are advised to consider sending their items in advance using cargo services before their flight.
Baggage Shipping Alternative: Lion Parcel Cargo Service
Lion Group also offers a cargo service named Lion Parcel for those who prefer to send their baggage ahead of time. This service is recommended to prevent excess baggage issues and comes with several advantages:
- Greater assurance: Cargo services are designed to handle larger and heavier items with specific handling procedures to ensure maximum protection.
- Ease of travel: By sending baggage in advance, passengers can enjoy a more convenient travel experience without managing large baggage at the airport.
- Flexible delivery: Cargo services can ensure that baggage reaches its intended destination safely and on time.
Reasons Behind the New Baggage Regulations
Beyond comfort and convenience, several other reasons support this stricter baggage policy:
- Safety of stored luggage: Limiting baggage size helps maintain balance and safety in the cargo hold. Items such as cardboard boxes, styrofoam, wooden crates, and sacks have higher potential to damage other luggage.
- Faster check-in processes: Baggage with standard sizes can be processed more efficiently, reducing wait times and minimizing the risk of flight delays.
- Equal baggage space allocation: With enforced limits, every passenger receives fair storage space, preventing disputes or overuse of space by certain passengers.
- Cabin cleanliness and safety: Items made from cardboard or other fragile materials are more likely to create messes or pose safety risks, so restricting them ensures a cleaner and safer onboard environment.
Now that you're aware of the updated baggage rules from airlines under Lion Group, make sure to adjust your travel plans accordingly to avoid extra fees or issues at the airport.
