The Malaysian passport has gained attention in recent years due to its significant improvement in international mobility. According to the official Henley & Partners index, Malaysia’s passport now ranks 12th, granting access to 180 countries, an impressive standing in the global passport power list.
Current Ranking of the Malaysian Passport

According to Henley’s report, the Malaysian passport holds the 12th position globally, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 180 countries or territories. This differs slightly from Malay Mail, which states the rank as 12th with access to 182–183 destinations. With this achievement, the Malaysian passport is now “equivalent to” or even surpasses some developed countries, including the United States.
Comparison with Indonesia and Singapore

For comparison, Indonesian passport holders still have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to significantly fewer countries. In other words, the gap between the strength of Indonesian and Malaysian passports remains substantial. Meanwhile, the Singaporean passport is recorded as one of the strongest in the world.
What Drives the Rise of Malaysia’s Passport Ranking?

Several factors have contributed to the strengthening of Malaysia’s passport position, including:
Diplomatic Agreements
Diplomatic agreements and reciprocal visa waivers with numerous countries.
Improved Reputation of Malayia
Malaysia has gained recognition as a country welcoming tourists and business travelers from around the world.
Performance of Travel and Security Systems
The Malaysian government has effective travel and security systems that build international trust. As a result, Malaysia’s position in the global passport index and ranking reflects successful diplomacy and foreign policy.
Challenges and Important Notes
Despite its high ranking, the Malaysian passport is not entirely free of restrictions. Some countries still impose specific requirements or exceptions (for example, for work purposes or length of stay). Additionally, changes in visa policies between countries can dynamically affect the ranking.
