Rules for Carrying Liquids in International Flight Cabins That You Must Know

When traveling on international flights, regulations regarding carry-on items are important to understand, one of which concerns the rules for carrying liquids such as beverages, cosmetics, and medicines.

These regulations are enforced for aviation security, and violations may result in liquids being confiscated or passengers being detained during airport security checks. By understanding the limitations and proper ways of carrying liquids, your journey can be smoother and free of problems.

What Liquids Are Allowed in International Cabins?

Passengers are allowed to bring various types of liquids, aerosols, and gels into the cabin of international flights, such as beverages, cosmetics, medicines, and other personal necessities.

These liquids may be items brought from home before departure, or those purchased at duty-free shops at the airport.

However, each type of liquid must comply with certain rules regarding container size, maximum quantity, and storage methods to ensure safety and compliance with international aviation security regulations.

Important Requirements for Carrying Liquids in Flight Cabins

Before bringing liquids into the cabin, passengers need to be aware of several important requirements to avoid problems during airport security checks. These rules include limitations on container size, the total amount of liquids allowed, and the proper storage method, as follows:

  • Container size limit: Each liquid, aerosol, or gel container carried into the cabin may hold a maximum of 100 ml or an equivalent size.
  • Storage in plastic bags: All liquid, aerosol, and gel containers must be placed in one transparent plastic bag measuring 30 x 40 cm, usually provided by the airport or airline. The total amount of liquids in this bag must not exceed 1 liter, and the bag must be closed or sealed.
  • Number of bags per passenger: Each passenger is only allowed to carry one transparent plastic bag containing liquids, aerosols, and gels. This bag must hold all types of liquids being carried.

If a passenger carries liquids exceeding the specified limit, the items must be placed in checked baggage (hold baggage) and/or may be confiscated by airport security officers.
However, the above requirements do not apply to liquids categorized as medical medicines, baby food/drinks, and special dietary food/drinks.

Regulations for Carrying Liquids from Duty-Free Shops on Flights

Passengers who purchase liquids, aerosols, or gels from duty-free shops at the airport must pay attention to special rules so that their items are still permitted on the flight. The following conditions must be met:

  • Storage in special bags: Liquids must be placed in transparent plastic bags provided by the duty-free shop and resealed after purchase.
  • Proof of purchase: Passengers must keep proof of purchase to present during airport security checks.
  • Separation from other items: During inspection, the plastic bag containing liquids must be separated from other belongings to ensure smooth screening.

Always check the latest airline and airport regulations regarding the rules for carrying liquids before departure. Do not let your travel plans be disrupted because your items violate the rules and are confiscated by airport authorities.
